Jill Mennie and Emmy Blu earned the HCKOC High Aggregate prize, awarded to the HCKOC member who obtains the highest combined obedience score at our annual show and trial.

Claire Paulson and Lily earned their CGN title. Lily is an 11 year old rescue, and Claire has helped her overcome so much to achieve this milestone!

Julie Williams and Zorro completed their Canadian Championship with a lovely Best of Breed win on Friday. On Saturday, Zorro took another Best of Breed win in his first time out as a Special.

Verna Blanchette and Elmo earned 2 legs towards their Pre-Novice Obedience title.

After a long hard battle, lasting nearly 2 years, Dayna and Gio FINALLY finished their CARO Rally-O Excellent title, with Magna Cum Laude! Final leg under judge Jeanne Shaw with a great score of 198/200. Gio also earned his first two legs of Rally Novice Team with team-mate Buddy!

Dayna and Romeo completed their CARO Rally-O Versatility title under judge Jeanne Shaw. Romeo also earned one Versatility C Stream leg with a score of 197/200 and his first two legs of Rally Novice Team with team-mate Bent, taking High in Class with a perfect 200/200 score!

Dayna and Romeo earned their first CKC Rally-O RAE leg with an Advanced score of 99/100 and 3rd in Class and an Excellent score of 99/100.

Lily, the Cairn Terrier, and Liz earned their first two legs of their CKC Rally Advanced title. Friday's trial saw Lily earn High in Class with a perfect 100/100 score!

Zephyr, the Cairn Terrier, and Liz earned their first two legs of their CKC Rally Advanced title with lovely scores in the 90's.
On Saturday, Jan and her Saluki boy, Torc, took Best of Breed!
Gina, the Miniature Poodle, and Gisele earned one qualifying leg in CKC Rally-O Excellent.
Katie, the Miniature Poodle, and Gisele earned two qualifying legs in CKC Rally-O Advanced.
Gina and Katie, with their handler Gisele, also competed in Brace Obedience and qualified with a score of 94/200!
Petey, the Havanese, and Claire finished off their Open Obedience title with scores of 190/200 and 189/200 with High in Class!

KAOS CARO Rally-O Trial - April 11, 2010

Dayna and Verna braved the stormy highway to make it to the KAOS CARO Rally-O trial in Regina this weekend.

Verna had some lovely moments in the ring with her German Pinscher, Julie, and Doberman Pinscher, Sasha!

Dayna and her Shelties, Gio and Romeo, also did quite well. Gio earned his second qualifying leg in Excellent with High in Class. Romeo completed his CARO Rally Silver (CRS) title with a wonderful score of 199/200. This makes Romeo the first dog in Saskatchewan to have earned this title. Romeo also earned two qualifying legs in Versatility, both with High in Class with scores of 195/200 and 198/200. Romeo also earned his first qualifying leg towards his CARO Rally Gold (CRG) title with a High in Class score of 196/200.

Many Hub City members participated in Shamrock Kennel and Obedience Club's trail in Yorkton, August 22 and 23, 2009. Lots of success and "blue loot" all around!

Jeannette and Gem qualified twice in Novice Rally-O with a High in Class score of 98/100, completing their CKC Rally-O Novice title.

Dayna and Gio completed their CKC Rally-O Excellent title with one perfect score of 100/100, a 99/100, and a 94/100. Dayna and Romeo also completed their CKC Rally-O Excellent title with two perfect 100/100 scores, including one High in Class, and a 99/100.

Gisele and Gina earned their CKC Rally-O Advanced title and two legs towards their Rally-O Excellent title. Gisele and Kate completed their CD in Obedience with three qualifying scores and one High in Trial. Gisele and Kate also earned one Rally-O Novice leg.

Pets in the Park 2009

On Sunday, July 12, 2009 New Hope Dog Rescue, Saskatoon SPCA, and SCAT street cat program hosted their annual Pets in the Park event.

Hub City attended with a booth full of information about classes and fun club events. They also held a Rally-O demonstration with club dogs showing off their skills around the outdoor Rally-O ring!

Viggo (Am. G.Ch. Counterpoint Painted by Bohem) is having a stellar show career! Viggo was the top winning male whippet in the US in 2010, and went BOS at the 2010 American National Whippet Specialty Show. His most recent accomplishment (pictured above) is taking Group 1st at the Rio Hondo show in California in May, 2011. Viggo was bred by HCKOC members Lynn and John Ross and Trudy Taphorn. Owned by Scott Mazer and Bo Bengston.

Jill, (MBIS, MBNSS, BRS, MBPIS Counterpoint Genuine Risk) was conceived during the Kentucky Derby, and named after a Kentucky Derby winner. It has proven to be prophetic, as she was #17 All-Breeds in Conformation in 2008, and is currently #1 Whippet in 2009. As of June 2009, she has had 11 Best In Shows, 2 National Best In Shows, 1 Regional Best in Show, and numerous other wins. We are very proud of breeding her. She was bred by John and Lynn Ross, and is owned by Trudy Taphorn.

Verna has always had a pet in the family while growing up, but she got her first Doberman in 1972. A lovely girl named Joy who changed everyone's opinion about the vicious Dobermans. She loved everyone and everyone loved her.

Verna joined HCKOC shortly afterwards as she knew nothing about showing dogs but fell in love with working with her Doberman girl in obedience. She raised three litters of puppies and one male made it to a Best In Show. Though this may be impressive, Verna got more pleasure from working with her dogs in obedience as it allowed them to work together.

Two female of Verna's own breeding obtained their Utility title and she has put Companion Dog Excellent titles on four others.

Verna has owned a German Pinscher out of the first litter born in Canada and imported another German Pinscher from England. They both obtained their CDX titles on the same weekend at a trial in Weyburn.

Verna has previously held the title of Obedience Director with HCKOC, and has done Agility with her dogs in the past and presently involved in Rally Obedience and Flyball. Sasha, Verna's current Doberman Pinscher has her PCD for CKC obedience and RNCL with CARO Rally obedience. Julie, her current German Pinscher, has her PCD and RN in CKC obedience and her RNCL in CARO Rally Obedience. In addition to this, Verna is a long time member of CKC.

She has always loved working with her dogs and just spending time with them. They ask so little and give so much.

HCKOC Show and Trial - May 1-3, 2009

Another year, another dog show! HCKOC hosted their annual dog show, including conformation, obedience, and rally-o, May 1-3, 2009. In addition to hosting a fabulous show, many of our members also competed!

* Gisele and Gina earned two Rally-O Advanced legs.

* Dayna and her two dogs, Gio and Romeo, were entered in all three Advanced Rally-O trials. In trial 1, Gio and Romeo tied for High in Class with scores of 97/100. In trial 2, Gio and Romeo tied for High in Class again, with scores of 98/100. In both trials, Gio was just seconds faster than Romeo so took the ribbons. Trial 3 saw each dog with another qualifying leg, scores of 94/100 and 92/100, both earning their Rally-O Advanced titles.

* Liz added two Rally-O Novice legs to each of her dogs, Lily and Zephyr. Lily took 3rd in class with a score of 89/100 and 2nd in class with a score of 98/100. Zephyr took 2nd in class with a 92/100 and 3rd in class with a score of 96/100.

* Jill and Tetley completed their Rally-O Excellent title with scores of 97/100, 96/100, and 95/100. This showing allowed them to finish their Rally-O Novice, Advanced, and Excellent titles with no non-qualifying runs!

* Jill also reports that Tetley has been named the #3 English Cocker Spaniel in CKC obedience for 2008!

* Jeannette competed in Rally-O with three of her dogs. Piper completed his Rally-O Novice title with a High in Class and earned one leg towards his Rally-O Advanced. Bailey earned two legs towards her Rally-O Advanced title. And Spice earned the second leg of her Advanced title with a High in Class.

* Jan made quite the impression in the conformation ring! Her boy, Auldstane Cunobelin ('Torc'), took WD in the Saluki Specialty. Her bitch, Auldstane Cygfa, took WB and BW. And Auldstane Breaca, co-owned by Jan, won the 12-18 month Sweepstakes. In the HCKOC shows, Torc went WD and BW under Robert Whitney and WD under Elaine Whitney. Cygfa went BOS and BW under Elaine Whitney and WB and BOS under Gerry Taylor. Iroki Auldstane Alleluja ('Gabriel') took BW under Gerry Taylor to finish his Championship!

* Shandra and her young male Siberian Husky took Group 4th, taking breed over specials. With more success on Saturday, they rounded off the weekend with 8 points!

The Chautauqua Canine Club of North Battleford hosted a show Easter weekend in North Battleford; conformation, obedience, and Rally-O.

As usual, HCKOC was well represented with many great successes!

Jeannette Hargreaves finished her CD on Piper with a High in Trial score of 193.5, and qualified in 4 of 4 trials.

Jeannette Hargreaves also added a CKC Novice Rally-O leg to Piper with a High in Class score of 100/100, and a leg for Spice with a 97/100.

Liz Philips has three Cairn Terriers. Recently, her dog Lily got her C.D. with one high-in-class, and both Lily and Zephyr have their Novice Rally Obedience titles and are working towards their Advanced titles in CARO. She enjoys clicker training, training her dogs to do tricks, competing in Rally Obedience and CKC Obedience, and she hopes to compete in Agility in the future.

Jae Yellowlees

Dogs have always been part of Jae's life. Jae didn't get into anything other than just having a dog as a buddy until she got her first Cairn terrier 12 years ago. She has 2 Cairns now, Rascal and Duncan.

In the past 12 years she has learned much about dog training and has attended many clicker training seminars, show handling seminars and classes, rally-o seminars and agility seminars. Jae has participated in Flyball, Musical Freestyle, Agility, Rally-O and Conformation.

Jae showed her male, Duncan, to his Canadian Championship. Jae has participated in and also helped teach flyball with Diamonds in the Ruff (Rascal is a FMX - #3 flyball Cairn in North America). She has also taught or helped teach basic obedience with Hub City Kennel and Obedience Club for many years. In 2009, Jae developed and taught HCKOC's CGN Test Prep Class.

Jae say's the best part about teaching is to see the dogs become more confident and the owners having much more fun training their dog. She has seen the bond between owners and dogs deepen through the course of a class. Jae believes in positive training methods and has seen how well they work, and wouldn't want to train a dog any other way.

I am a latecomer to dog activities, but have always had a dog as a family pet.

My obedience interest started 14 years ago with the purchase of an English Cocker Spaniel as a pet. After attending Basic Obedience Classes I got hooked on competitive obedience. I worked with members of the Shamrock Kennel and Obedience Club in Yorkton, SK and attended several seminars in able obtain a CKC OTCH title on that dog.

I was a helper/trainer for the Shamrock Club (Yorkton) and SKOC (Saskatoon) before joining HCKOC about three years ago (~2006). I have titled my present ECS in CKC Obedience (Companion Dog Excellent) and have shown him to a CKC Conformation Championship . I continue to work with him in Rally Obedience with an Excellent CARO Title and Advanced CKC Rally title. We are also active in tracking and agility.

Dayna is involved in many dog sports, having titled her dogs in CARO Rally-O, CKC Rally-O, flyball, CKC Obedience and St. John Ambulance therapy dog. She is also actively training her dogs in tracking and agility. She began her life in dog sports in 2002 with flyball, where she trained and competed with River Runners for a number of years. That quickly expanded to numerous other dog sports within a few short years.

Dayna has been training with Hub City since January 2008. She is a Provincial Evaluator for the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog program and a judge for Canadian Association of Rally Obedience (CARO).

Our Methods

Our training methods are all positive, focusing on rewards (food, toys, play, etc.) with the goal of building trust, forming a bond, and having fun learning together.
Our classes are designed so that each level is a continuation from the previous set of classes. Should you want to start up a level, our trainers will assess where you and your dog would fit best and get the most out of our classes.

We have skilled and experienced trainers. They focus on keeping their training knowledge and methods up to date by attending workshops and seminars regularly.
Our trainers are active participants and competitors in obedience, rally-o, agility, flyball, musical freestyle, earthdog, tracking, and therapy dog.

Our members have a wealth of information and experience in the dog world. In addition to training and competing in dog sports, many of our members are active and successful in the show ring. Our members have decades of experience in breeding, judging and showing a multitude of breeds. We are pleased to have among our ranks two all breed conformation judges who have judged internationally.

The training policy of HCKOC is one that relies on positive training methods such as clicker training, free shaping, and reward-based training. Our trainers are experienced in many areas of dog training and have first hand competition experience in numerous venues, including conformation, obedience, rally-o, agility, flyball, tracking, therapy dog, earthdog, and canine freestyle.

We strive to keep our training knowledge and skills current and relevant by attending seminars and workshops whenever possible.

Our classes are often taught by two or more trainers at a time, ensuring that each student has the opportunity for individualized attention and instruction when needed.

History of HCKOC

The exact history of the HCKOC is unknown. To try and piece things together, we have asked our long-time members to compile a history of the club as they know it.

"According to Dogs In Canada, the April 1960 issue, HCKOC has been in existence since at least 1934. In the late 60's when I joined the club, we were a very active obedience club. We trained for years on the second floor of the Exhibition Hockey Arena, which is now a parking lot. At that time, HCKOC did a lot of community activities, from going as a club to various Senior Citizen's Homes, to marching in the annual Traveller's Day Parade with our drill team, as well as performing at other events. Our drill team did obedience routines to music, and all the dogs were paired with similar dogs for a routine similar to the RCMP Musical Ride. Club meetings and obedience classes were social occasions for us, and were enjoyed by all."

Canine Good Neighbour

The Canine Good Neighbour (CGN) program is offered by the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC). It is open to all dogs, purebred and mixed breed, and places an emphasis on good canine manners and a strong bond between the handler and dog. The CGN program is designed to recognize responsible pet ownership and the ability of a dog to fit in as a well behaved member of the community.

To obtain a CGN recognition, the handler and dog must pass a test comprised of 12 elements, including:

Accepting a Friendly Stranger
Politely Accepts Petting
Appearance and Grooming
Out for a Walk
Walking Through a Crowd
Sit/Down on Command and Stay in Place on a Long Line
Come When Called on a Long Line
Praise/Interaction
Reaction to Passing Dog
Reaction to Distractions
Supervised Isolation
Walking Through a Door/Gate

CKC Obedience

Obedience is a competitive sport that showcases a purebred dog's training and ability to behave in the home and in public places, and to work with and upon command from the handler in a variety of specially designed tasks. Tasks include heeling, extended stays, scent discrimination, retrievals, and directed jumping, among others. Each task is performed in a very specific manner so as to ensure that each dog is judged to the same standard. As such, allowances for handicapped handlers and/or dogs are minimal.

Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) is currently the only organization in Saskatchewan that offers formal obedience trials. While the CKC only allows purebred registered dogs, or those dogs that have their Performance Even Number (PEN), to compete in trials and earn titles, any dog, purebred or otherwise, can enjoy the sport and participate in fun matches without earning titles.

A Performance Event Number (PEN) is assigned by the CKC and allows a purebred unregistered dog to compete in performance events such as agility, obedience, rally-o, tracking, etc. Basically any trial options that CKC offers except for conformation. Rally-O

Rally-O, or Rally Obedience, is a fun sport that is open to all dogs, purebred or mixed breed, young or old. It incorporates elements from obedience with aspects of agility and canine freestyle to form a game that is upbeat and exciting, while focusing on a strong bond between handler and dog.

In Saskatchewan, there are two main organizations that offer Rally-O trials:
Canadian Association of Rally Obedience (CARO) is an organization that is open to all purebreds and mixed breeds. Allowances can be made for handicapped handlers and/or dogs.

Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) also offers Rally-O, though competition is limited to purebred registered dogs or dogs that have their CKC Performance Event Number (PEN).

At HCKOC we accept both purebred and mixed breed dogs into our classes, as such our Rally-O training classes are aimed primarily at CARO Rally-O. But our trainers are familiar with both venues, so will be able to assist you in training for whichever venue you wish to pursue.

This sport is growing rapidly in Saskatchewan, with numerous opportunities to compete throughout the year!

Breed: Cairn Terriers and Golden Retrievers

I have been a dog lover all of my life. I have been active in conformation, obedience, agility, flyball, rally-o, musical freestyle and earthdog.

Besides teaching and taking classes, I have attended numerous workshops and seminars, and I am a member of the Canadian Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers. For twenty years, I have bred Cairn Terriers. Over the last 25 years, I have been an active club member of several dog clubs and held various executive positions as well as worked in various capacities at dog shows. I joined the HCKOC in 1992. I have attended dog shows in the USA, many parts of Canada and recently the World Dog Show in Sweden. My passion is dog sports of all kinds and teaching others to enjoy their ompanions as well.

My husband and I currently live with a couple of Golden Retrievers and a handful of Cairn Terriers on an acreage just south of Saskatoon.

All of our training is based on positive training theories and methods. Our trainers are skilled, experienced and accomplished in methods such as clicker training, free shaping, and reward-based training. We strive to keep class sizes small so that each student gets individual attention from instructors.

We offer a variety of classes, including:

Puppy Class: Includes play time, introduction to clicker training, and beginning of obedience (sit, down, leash manners, come). Graduates from our puppy class can go into beginner obedience or one of the other classes depending on their skill level as determined by our trainers.

K9 Fun 101: A fun new class that includes a combination of various training aspects. Tunnels, games, recalls, weave polls/pylons, jumps, and socialization (human, dog, environment).

Conformation: Basics, practice, show ready. Includes an annual workshop with Saskatchewan's top professional handlers. (Due to limited space, we will not be offering conformation classes in 2009)

Obedience: A series of classes starting with beginner obedience and advancing to competition training for CKC Novice, Open, and Utility levels.

Rally-O: A series of classes starting with an introduction to Rally-O and advancing to competition training for CARO and/or CKC Novice, Advanced, Excellent, and Versatility levels. We require that a dog have a basic/beginner obedience class before taking one of our Rally-O classes. Before beginning Rally-O classes, dogs should have a decent sit, down, heel, and stay.

Canine Good Neighbour: This class is modeled after the CKC Canine Good Neighbour test. The class will introduce and provide instruction for each aspect of the test.

Our shows and trials will be held in Hall E at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon, SK, May 6-8, 2011.

Our new location in Hall E offers a large and bright space, newly renovated, with excellent facilities. It is located at the entrance to Prairieland Park, very convenient for the public and the exhibitors. There is excellent loading door access, and access to the tree shaded trailer parking area, nearby. This hall will easily accommodate all activities, including the CGN test which will be in an area that can be viewed from the main area of the hall while having its separate access door.
